Coral bead jewellery set — CRAW stitch

Last updated: 19 March 2026

A matching necklace and bracelet set made entirely with the CRAW stitch (Cubic Right Angle Weave) using Preciosa 8/0 glass seed beads in coral colour.

CRAW is one of my favourite beading stitches. It creates a three-dimensional, rope-like structure that looks complex but is actually built from a simple repeating unit — a cube of four beads.

What is CRAW stitch?

CRAW stands for Cubic Right Angle Weave. It’s a 3D version of the flat Right Angle Weave (RAW) stitch. Each unit is a cube made of four beads on each face.

The result is a sturdy, tube-like rope with a square cross-section. It works well for both bracelets and necklaces — the structure is rigid enough to hold its shape but flexible enough to wrap around a wrist or neck.

Materials

  • Preciosa seed beads 8/0 — coral colour (one colour for the entire set)
  • Beading needle — size 10 or 12
  • Beading thread — FireLine 6lb or similar
  • Clasp and jump rings for the bracelet
  • Clasp or toggle for the necklace

Size 8/0 beads are ideal for CRAW. They’re large enough to see the cubic structure clearly and easy to work with.

FAQ

How long does it take to make a CRAW bracelet?

A bracelet took me about 8 hours. The necklace — around 20 hours. CRAW is time-consuming because each cube requires multiple passes through the beads. The stitch is repetitive though, so it speeds up once you get into the rhythm.

Can I use different bead sizes for CRAW?

Yes. Size 11/0 makes a thinner, more delicate rope. Size 8/0 (used here) creates a chunkier look. You can also mix sizes — for example, 8/0 on the faces and 11/0 in the corners for a textured effect.

What makes CRAW different from flat RAW?

Flat RAW creates a 2D sheet of beads. CRAW builds on top of flat RAW to form a 3D tube. Each new row adds a “roof” to the previous cubes, stacking them into a solid rope.
